To V.O.
Chidambaram Pillai goes the credit of launching, as the
first Indian, a Steam Navigation Company that ran a
service between Tuticorin and Colombo. He did it in the
interests of the nation's economy, and of course,
against the British rule.
V.O. Chidambaram Pillai came out of the Congress in
1920.
He was born on September 5, 1872 in Ottapidaram,
Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. He had his education
in Tuticorin and took a Degree in Law form Madras.
V.O.Chidambaram pillai , affectionately called 'Swadeshi
pillai' or 'Vande Mataram pillai' by ordinary folk, was
the chief organizer of the Swadeshi movement. He was a
practicising lawyer at tuticorin and was successful in
his profession. He could command great influence and
respect as lawyers generally did in those days. |
 |
He
began to take interest in many public activities and was
one of the earliest to start 'Dharma Sangh' for
hand-loom industry and 'Swadeshi Stores' for the sale of
India-made things to the people. Though great men like
Kasthuri Renga Iyengar, Doraisami Iyer and Chakkarai
Chettiar were also taking a prominent part in the
Nationalist upsurge , it was given to V.O.Chidambaram to
achieve the impossible and get immortalized as the
'Pioneer of Indian Shipping'. His unique and powerful
expression of swadeshi activity was the starting of the
Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company which was registered
on the 12th of November 1906. It required some supreme
courage to go to jail in those days. A number of
patriots went to jail in our fight for freedom. V.O.C
was the pioneer who showed the way. |

Maruthanayagam Pillai (or Mathuranayagam Pillai) alias Yusuf Khan was
born circa
1725 in the village of Panaiyur, in Rammnad family of
Vellalar caste.
Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (who was in the service of
Muhammed Ali Khan Wallajah, the Nawab of Arcot, for three years),
mentions in his 'Genuine Memoirs of Asiaticus'
[1] (2nd Ed 1785,page 160), that Maruda Pillai was of royal
extraction and high descent.
The Scots Magazine (for the year 1765,page 264) tells of a letter
written by a gentleman in the East Indies to a friend in Scotland, from
the military camp before Palamcottah, dated 22 October 1764 (a
week after his hanging), wherein Maruda Pillai is said to be 'descended
from the ancient seed of that nation'
By 1760 Yusuf Khan had reached the zenith of his career as the
'all-conquering' military commandant. (A few years earlier he had been
given the rank of 'Commandant of Company's sepoys'). His greatest
supporter during this period was
George Pigot, the English governor in Madras. Yusuf Khan was held in
very high esteem even after his death by the English and in their
opinion he was one of the two great military geniuses India had ever
produced; the other being
Hyder
Ali of Mysore. Yusuf Khan was regarded for his strategy and Hyder
Ali for his speed. Major General Sir.
John Malcolm said of him almost a fifty years later,"Yusuf
Khan was by far the bravest and ablest of all the native soldiers ever
to serve the English in India".

..."In the course of centuries the Tamil Saivas, who were
vegetarians and who had looked upon the Aryas as mlecchas for
their [habits of] meat-eating and drinking intoxicants and as
untouchables came, by the force of juxtaposition, of aryan
adaptability, and of political contingencies, to be reconciled
to the ways and habits of their neighbours and to accept the
authority of the Vedas, [...] Saivaism, accepting the Vedic
rule, became metamorphosed into Vaidika Saivaism." (p154-55)

Ramalinga Swamigal, popularly known as
Vallalar
*
one of most notable saints on the Indian sub-continent
in 19 century.
*
born on October 5, 1823, in Marudur near Chidambaram into a
Hindu Saivite family,
5th child and last son
parents Ramayya Pillai
& Chinnammayyar.
*
Over 120 years, his dharmasalai fire not
put out and the needy are still fed.
*
Miracle-cures were performed by him
some recorded in the
British archives
*
composed thousands of verses breathing universal love and
peace, which are all available today as a single six-volume
work called 'Tiru-arut-paa',
(Holy Poems Sweeter than Nectar).
*
Thiru arutpA (திருவருட்பா) , made up of 5818 poems
based on ஆசிரிய விருத்தம் for most of his poems which
are arranged in six, seven or eight meters (ஆறுசீர்,
எழுசீர், எண்சீர் வரிசைகள்).
*
He is also controversial. Vallalar's Arutpa songs were
questioned for its depth and strength and called as a
Marutpa by Srilanka Arumuga Navalar & Eswaramoorthy
Pillai. He accepts himself as a Sex Maniac. He lost the
court case against Arumuga Navalar [defamation case] and the
Court also decided that his songs are not Arutpa.

His body never cast a shadow--an
extraordinary case of being visible yet transparent.
*
According to Indian government records, he went into a room
without any windows and had his followers guard the
entrance. The British official who came then made an
official statement that Ramalinga Swamigal had
'disappeared'.
*
The next day the British collector of that district came to
investigate. Later the collector wrote that he had an
extraordinary feeling and did not feel that it was necessary
to open the door. He bore the expenses for feeding the poor
that day.

MUTHU
THANDAVAR (16th
TO 17th centuries A.D)
Hailing from Seerkazhi in a saivite vellalar family, he could
not pursue his family tradition of learning Nagaswaram due to a
sickness. His visits to the house of a temple maid [Thevar
Adiyal/ Devadasi] in order to witness her Sivanama Keerthanas
and dances were disliked by his relatives resulting in his
expulsion from the family.
His visits to the temple and ardent devotion
earned him divine direction to visit Chidambaram temple. He
composed not less than 60 Keerthanas and 25 Padams in Tamil and
thus he became the Father and Founder of the tradition of
Keerthanai and Kritis. |
