What is Saivism?
Dear Friend
Though your questions about Saivism are two and very brief, I hope
you won't
mind a little elaboration, which I think might help others also:
SAIVISM: Ancient Indian philosophies of the BC centuries were the
basis of
early Saivism as was known in Thamiz Naadu. Scientifically, the
sound vaves
in the vacuum of the macrocosm universe originated the five elements
of
space, air, fire, water and land mass, known as Panja BoothangkaL.
OongkaaraththuL uthitha aymbuuthangkaL
OongaraththuL uthiththa saraa-saram Thirumanthiram.
In the microcosm body, which is a miniature form of the universe,
the sounds
of letters Aaa, Vuu, Maa initiating from the stomach, coming thro'
the
ventricle of the throat, modulated by the tongue and nose comes out
as a
combined Oom sound, the origin of voice and language. Oom is called
praNava
manthiram (the process of breathing for maintaing life energy) and
is also
the basis of Ookam (yoka) in Saivism.
In ancient Thamizh Country, the concept of Saivism was the embodiment
and
manifestations of mother Nature, symbolised as Kandan (tree) and
Murukan
(beauty); the later was also deemed the preserver of Kurunji (Hill
Lands).
Latter on with the influence of the Vedas, Sanaadhana Vaidee-kam and
Saangiam philosopy, it gradually modified and changed with
Spiritualism
(Jeevan concept of the Jains) in the forefront, became an organised
religion
worshipping Sivan, symbolically as Lingam and also in various idol
forms.
Around 7 century BC, owing to differences in approaches and rituals
Saivism
split into different cults: 1. Suddha Saivam 2. Paasu-Patham 3. Maa
Viradham
4. KaaLa Mukam 5. Vairavam 6. Sakthi Vazipaadu.
Saiva Siddhaantham based on the first two, has as its guide the
Vedas,
Sastras, Agamas etc. and belives that God (Pathi) is without origin
or end,
his might is mystic (maayai) which originates and guides the
universe, all
matter, the world, life mechanisms etc. Its three basic codes are 1.
Pasu
(the contained state of the spirit) 2. Paasam (the three threads
that bind -
Ego, Karma and Mysticism) 3. Pathi (primordial matter - God).
Liberation of
the spirit from attachments and attaining salvation (Mukthi) and
identifying
with God is the ultimate aim.
Veera Saivam: In 12th century BC, a religious revolution movement
was
initiated and led by BASUVESWARA in Karnataka known as 'veerasaivam'
which
strongly opposed the transformation of Saivism, from the human
based
philosophy of materialism, into an abstract spiritual philosophy
based on
discriminatory subjugation of people on the basis of colour, sects,
castes,
rituals and blind beliefs. Veerasaivam preaches equality of all
humanity and
its followers worship God, in a broad view of nature, in the
symbolic form
of Lingam (and not in any form of idols) and are known as Lingayats.
SIDDHARS: They are known as reformers of Saivism, on the principle
that the
concepts of God, religions, cults are all human-made. Truth and
Affection
residing in the light of our mind is the real form of God. Knowledge
and
Wisdom are based on six senses, developed by the thought process of
our
mind, refined by yogas and hard labour of the body, taking care to
avoid the
faults of ignorance and fear. Rationalism is a natural phenomenon
and
evolution of species is a result of constant struggle for existence
and
development, striving to harmonise external forces of nature and the
nature
within ourselves. Siddars were well versed with the worldly
ways (lokaayutham) and were experts in literature, natural medicine,
psychology, meditation and foresight by hard experiences.
They contended that our mind is God, body is a mobile Temple, voice
is the
Gateway and 5 senses are the unfailing Lights (Thirumanthiram).
Siddars did
not subscribe themselves to Idol worship, rituals or vedic
principles or
yaakas, but propagated self-realization as the best form of God.
